El consumo de alcohol es la principal causa de los accidentes automovilísticos de México y está detrás del 70 por ciento de las muertes que ocurren en las carreteras de este país. El hecho de que en los últimos dos años se haya incrementado un 10 por ciento el consumo de alcohol en México ha ocasionado más de la mitad de las muertes por accidentes de tránsito, revelan estudios realizados por la Secretaría de Salud.
Según la publicación Observatorio de Alcohol, Tabaco y Otras drogas de la SSA, el 54 por ciento de las muertes por accidentes de tránsito en el país ocurren entre jueves, viernes y sábado y están relacionadas con el consumo de alcohol.

Los efectos provocados por el alcohol en la conducción se pueden agrupar en tres tipos:
•Efectos sobre la función psicomotora y las capacidades del conductor. El alcohol aumenta el tiempo de reacción, es decir, se incrementa el tiempo que tarda la persona después de percibir plenamente las sensaciones y/o recibir información, en decidir qué debe hacer y cuándo debe actuar. También deteriora la coordinación bimanual y la resistencia a la monotonía, y se altera la capacidad para juzgar la velocidad, la distancia y la situación relativa del vehículo, así como la capacidad para seguir una trayectoria o hacer frente a una situación inesperada.
•Efectos sobre la visión. La acomodación y la capacidad para seguir objetos con la vista se deteriora, incluso con niveles bajos de alcohol en sangre. Además, se reduce el campo visual, se altera la visión periférica y se retrasa la recuperación de la vista después de un deslumbramiento.
•Efectos sobre el comportamiento y la conducta. El alcohol produce un efecto de sobrevaloración de la persona que da lugar a una mayor seguridad en sí mismo. Puede alterar la conducta-comportamiento, y bajo sus efectos no son infrecuentes las reacciones de euforia, agresividad, conductas temerarias...
•Además, si una persona consume alcohol durante mucho tiempo puede sufrir problemas de tipo físico como trastornos gástricos, problemas hepáticos (hepatitis, cirrosis, cáncer...), hipertensión arterial, problemas cardiovasculares, neurológicos, musculares, etc.
